OPTIONAL / MANUAL ZIP INSTALL

Install a GitHub ZIP on your Windows PC

These steps apply only to manual ZIP downloads. For the simplest installation and automatic updates, use Add to Chrome above.

Use desktop Chrome for these steps. Chrome on Android and iPhone doesn’t support installing this extension.

01 / DOWNLOAD & EXTRACT

Give it a permanent home

Download Just Enough 1.0.1, then open your Downloads folder. Right-click Just-Enough-v1.0.1.zip and choose Extract All.

Move the extracted Just-Enough folder somewhere you’ll keep it, such as your Documents folder. You need the folder containing manifest.json.

Keep this extracted folder. Chrome reads its files from here. Moving or deleting it after installation can stop the extension working.

02 / OPEN EXTENSIONS

Head to Chrome’s extension page

Copy the address below, paste it into Chrome’s address bar, then press Enter.

chrome://extensions

The address goes into the bar at the top of Chrome where website addresses appear.

03 / DEVELOPER MODE

Switch on Developer mode

On the Extensions page, turn on Developer mode at the top right. This reveals the Load unpacked button.

04 / LOAD THE FOLDER

Choose Just Enough

Click Load unpacked. In the folder picker, select the extracted Just-Enough folder containing manifest.json, then click Select Folder.

Choose the extracted folder, rather than the ZIP file. If you see another folder called Just-Enough inside the one you opened, go into that one until you can see manifest.json.

Just Enough should now appear on the Extensions page with its switch turned on.

05 / REFRESH & PIN

That’s it. Start browsing.

Refresh any websites you already had open. It starts automatically on new pages. When a supported banner appears, it looks for a clear refusal or necessary-only choice.

For easy access, click Chrome’s puzzle-piece Extensions icon, find Just Enough, and click the pin beside it.

The extension’s popup lets you turn automatic rejection on or off, pause it for the current site, or check the page again. A toolbar check mark means it clicked a choice; it doesn’t independently verify how the website honoured it.

GOOD TO KNOW

A little care goes a long way

  • Unclear banners stay manual. The first version recognises clear English choices and some preference flows. It won’t handle every website.
  • Earlier choices stay as they are. This doesn’t undo previously accepted cookies, delete them, or block tracking scripts by itself.
  • No tracking or remote service. The extension processes banners in your browser and stores its settings locally.
Why does Chrome give it access to websites?

It needs access to ordinary HTTP and HTTPS pages to recognise cookie banners and click the appropriate choice automatically. The same access lets its per-site pause work for cookie banners inside frames. It doesn’t request Chrome’s cookies, history, passwords, or downloads APIs, and its code makes no network requests.

A banner is still showing. What should I do?

First refresh the website, then check that automatic rejection and “Run on this site” are on in the extension’s popup. Try Check this page again. If the banner stays, choose its cookie settings manually. Some layouts, languages, protected browser pages, and embedded components aren’t supported.

How do I update it?

If you installed from the Chrome Web Store, Chrome updates it automatically. The following steps are for a manual ZIP installation.

Download the newer ZIP when one is released and extract it. Replace the files in the same permanent Just-Enough folder you used to install it. Open chrome://extensions, click the reload icon on the Just Enough card, then refresh your website tabs. The manual ZIP version doesn’t update automatically. Chrome Web Store installations update automatically.

How do I pause or remove it?

Click the pinned Just Enough icon and switch off Automatic rejection to pause everywhere, or switch off Run on this site for the current hostname. To remove it, open chrome://extensions and click Remove on the Just Enough card. Pausing or removing it won’t undo cookie choices already made.
